Shannon Kobylarczyk, an attorney and former corporate legal leader, has launched her Personal Mental Health & Resilience Pledge, an initiative that translates professional governance values into daily wellness practices. The pledge emerges against a backdrop of significant workplace stress, with data from the American Psychological Association showing 77% of employees report experiencing work-related stress and nearly 3 in 5 workers report negative mental health impacts from work. Kobylarczyk stated, "I spent years taking care of everyone except myself. Eventually, that catches up with you." Her approach applies the clarity and structure she used in corporate governance to personal wellness, arguing that when people understand expectations—including those they set for themselves—they perform better.
The National Alliance on Mental Illness reports that 1 in 5 U.S. adults experiences mental illness each year, yet over 60% of adults with a mental health condition do not receive treatment. The pledge consists of seven concrete commitments Kobylarczyk is adopting publicly, including taking daily uninterrupted breaks without screens, scheduling non-negotiable weekly wellness activities, speaking openly about mental health in appropriate settings, setting clear work boundaries, conducting weekly stress check-ins with trusted individuals, prioritizing sleep as a leadership responsibility, and seeking support early rather than waiting for crisis. Kobylarczyk noted, "Mental health doesn't wait its turn. You either address it early, or it demands your attention."
The timing is critical as burnout among working parents has doubled in recent years, and chronic stress contributes to heart disease, anxiety disorders, and reduced workplace productivity. According to the World Health Organization, depression and anxiety cost the global economy $1 trillion annually in lost productivity. Kobylarczyk believes change begins individually, stating, "Big systems change slowly, but personal habits can change today." Accompanying the pledge is a do-it-yourself mental wellness toolkit featuring 10 free actions anyone can take, such as taking a 10-minute walk without a phone, writing down stress triggers and boundaries, setting a daily hard stop time for work, and practicing saying 'I need a moment' without apology.
A 30-day progress tracker provides a structured approach with weekly focuses on awareness, boundaries, communication, and sustainability. Kobylarczyk concluded, "Your path won't look perfect, but if you keep showing up—for yourself too—you build something real." The initiative addresses a pressing need, as highlighted by resources like NAMI and WHO, which document the scale and economic impact of mental health challenges globally. By framing wellness through a governance lens, the pledge offers a practical, structured response to systemic issues that affect millions in the workplace and beyond.
