American Heart Association and NFL Expand CPR Training Initiative at Super Bowl Experience

The American Heart Association's Nation of Lifesavers Mobile CPR Unit will provide free Hands-Only CPR instruction to attendees at the NFL's Super Bowl Experience at the Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco from February 3 through February 7. This collaboration marks the sixth appearance of the mobile unit at a signature NFL event, following previous appearances at Super Bowls and NFL Drafts. Qualified trainers will offer walk-up style instruction where participants learn the correct rate and depth of chest compressions needed to perform this lifesaving skill.

According to American Heart Association data, 9 out of every 10 people who experience cardiac arrest outside of a hospital die, often because they do not receive immediate CPR more than half of the time. Compression-only CPR, known as Hands-Only CPR, can be equally effective as traditional CPR in the first few minutes of emergency response and involves calling 911 if you see a teen or adult suddenly collapse, then pushing hard and fast in the center of the chest. With nearly 3 out of 4 cardiac arrests outside of the hospital occurring in homes, knowing how to perform CPR is essential for improving survival chances.

"When more people know CPR, more lives can be saved. Teaching fans CPR during the Super Bowl Experience transforms one of the world's biggest sporting events into a powerful opportunity for public health impact," said Nancy Brown, chief executive officer of the American Heart Association. The organization and NFL aim to double survival rates by 2030 through their Nation of Lifesavers movement, which seeks to increase the number of people prepared to administer CPR during cardiac emergencies.

The partnership extends beyond the Super Bowl event through year-round activations. The NFL supports the American Heart Association's in-school programs, Kids Heart Challenge and American Heart Challenge, which have been teaching CPR for nearly 50 years. Five students from across the country won Super Bowl LX tickets through these programs after learning Hands-Only CPR, and their schools are now eligible for $10,000 physical education makeovers. Both students and schools can enter now to win tickets to Super Bowl LXI in Los Angeles in 2027 through the program supported by the NFL Foundation.

To further promote CPR education, 32 NFL players serve as the 2025 class of the American Heart Association's Nation of Lifesaver Player Ambassadors, asking family, friends and fans to learn the lifesaving skill. Since January 2023, the American Heart Association has worked with more than half of NFL teams to educate players, staff, local youth coaches and fan families on Hands-Only CPR and train them in Heartsaver CPR AED. The mobile CPR unit will also appear at the upcoming 2026 NFL Draft in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, continuing the partnership's reach. The Association encourages everyone to take 90 seconds to learn how to save a life now at https://www.heart.org/nation.
